In Vol. 1, we introduced the NEO GEO Controller and HORI Fighting Stick.
Neo Geo also has controllers that are more compact than full-size joysticks and easier to use in limited spaces.
In Vol. 2, we will introduce the following two models, which are listed as “Compact Controllers” in our shop.
- NEO GEO Controller Pro
- NEO GEO Controller Pad
One is a compact joystick designed to be placed on a desk or another stable surface, while the other is a gamepad-style controller held in the hands.
Each has its own distinct shape, method of use, directional input and button design, and overall feel during play.
NEO GEO Controller Pro
The NEO GEO Controller Pro is also commonly known as the “Bean Controller” because of its distinctive rounded shape.
Like the NEO GEO Controller and HORI Fighting Stick, it is a joystick-style controller, but its body is more compact and easier to place in a limited space.
The standard ball-top version is shaped so that the player can rest a thumb on it while operating the lever, providing a different feel from a full-size joystick.
It is well suited not only to fighting games, but also to action games, shooting games, and other genres.
On a standard NEO GEO Controller Pro, the A, B, C, and D buttons use rubber membrane contacts.
In our shop, we replace these with a switch-based configuration using switches made by Sanwa Denshi or Seimitsu. This provides a more distinct button feel than the original configuration.
NEO GEO Controller Pad
The NEO GEO Controller Pad is a compact controller with a shape similar to a conventional gamepad.
It features four blue, green, red, and yellow buttons, giving it a distinctly Neo Geo design.
Its directional input is particularly distinctive.
Its directional control differs from a conventional D-pad and has a distinctive tactile click. Despite its compact size, its controls also feel designed with fighting-game commands in mind.
However, whether this directional input feels comfortable will depend on the player.
It is lighter than a full-size joystick and can be held comfortably during play, making it suitable not only for fighting games but also for action and shooting games.
It is also a good choice for those who prefer to enjoy Neo Geo in the same style as they would with a conventional gamepad.
Using Different Controllers to Suit the Way You Play
The NEO GEO Controller Pro and NEO GEO Controller Pad are both compact, but they differ considerably in shape, method of use, and overall feel.
Using a full-size joystick for fighting games and a compact controller for action or shooting games is another enjoyable way to experience Neo Geo.
Of course, it is also possible to enjoy every game with a single controller.
The controller that feels easiest to use will depend not only on the games you play, but also on where you use it, your playing position, and your personal control preferences.
In our shop, every controller we sell is disassembled, cleaned, and given any necessary maintenance. Because the feel can vary depending on age and previous use, we test the operation of each unit individually both before it is listed for sale and again before packing.
We hope the characteristics introduced in Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 will help you choose the controller that feels most enjoyable for you to use.
